Keeping Phillipston’s History in PhillipstonFor several years a few core founding members had realized that the town was losing its history to the neighboring towns because Phillipston did not have a historical society or any place to store and maintain historical items.Phillipston was incorporated as a town in 1786 by merging the western section of Templeton with the eastern section of Athol making it easier for residents to attend church, a requirement at the time. When elderly Phillipston residents whose families had lived in town for several generations passed away, it was only natural for their families to look to either Athol or Templeton as a repository for items of historical interest. The Historical Society of Phillipston, Inc. was established in 2000 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The purpose of the Society is to cultivate and encourage an interest in the history of Phillipston and to establish and maintain a museum. In 2007 the Society published The Spirit of Phillipston, a fascinating history of the town - 352 pages and over 700 photos. The book can be purchased from the Society (Tel: 978-939-5656). The Society also renovated the former Methodist Church on State Road as a museum which is open on Sundays and Wednesdays from mid-June through September. Throughout the year, the Society holds regular programs that are open to the public . Organization
